Hair Growth Cycle
Hair growth is cyclic and asynchronous. There are three phases of hair growth
Anagen Phase: Active growth phase of hair growth cycle. In normal healthy scalp 85%-90% of hairs are in anagen phase. It last for 2-6 years. In this phase dermal papilla cells divide rapidly and move up the hair bulb. These cell are then converted to cell of hair shaft.
Catagen Phase: This is the transient phase of hair growth cycle. It lasts only for 2-3 weeks. Only 1% of hairs are there in this phase in healthy scalp. In this phase hair bulb separates from dermal papilla. The hair follicle shrinks to one third of its previous length and migrates towards the scalp surface.
Telogen Phase: This is resting or shedding phase of hair growth cycle. It last for 2-4 months. Around 10%-15% of hairs are in Telogen phase in healthy scalp condition. At the end of Telogen phase, hair is released and the next cycle is initiated. About 100 hairs shed each day and about same number of follicles enters anagen phase.
